Overview: Foodie Friend is a social media app, designed to tackle food waste through meal prepping dates.
Challenge: In the United States 40% of food waste is produce at home, with a monthly spend of $150-$300 per household on groceries, yet about 300 lbs of food gets wasted (per individual), every year. Ultimately contributing to climate change efforts and exuded greenhouse gases through wasted production efforts. My project aims to alleviate these issues by creating a fun, unique social networking environment through forgotten, extra, or soon-to-be thrown out foods within two or more people.
Research: I wanted to learn more about people's behaviors when it comes to their eating and spending habits, I got my quantitive research through performed surveys, influencing my design decisions.
Key findings: I found that the hardest groceries to finish were breads/grains and produce, mainly vegetables.
I also found that 55% have a weekly/biweekly schedule of cleaning their fridge, whereas the rest are cleaning it after one month.
Finally, though majority of the participants are "cost-conscious" when it comes to their groceries, 70% admit to going over their budget, and up to 35% will end up throwing untouched food. I realized this issue is a combination of food waste and spending behaviors.
User Research: three personas were created to represent three different archetypes, each with their own user maps.
